2023-08-23

"We remaster past content and reproduce it as new trend content that matches contemporary sensibilities."

Kim Dong-kyu, CEO of Viking Lab, explained artificial intelligence (AI) remastering technology in this way. AI remastering technology allows background elements of content to be easily altered through the use of artificial intelligence.

Viking Lab is a company specializing in new media content production. It engages in the creation of digital humans and other 3D productions using AI and algorithmic technology. The company is also involved in operating a post-production technology support platform. It pursues projects such as designing shared production systems, distributing software, and developing retargeting technologies that allow background elements or objects in videos to be newly replaced.

CEO Kim stated, "Hollywood built today's cinematic universes by spinning off past content like Superman, and that became a major asset for Hollywood. Viking Lab is working to supply high-quality AI-based remastering and retargeting technologies to domestic and global production environments, and I believe this will contribute to the growth of Korean content."

He added, "The experience and knowledge accumulated through software distribution and supply businesses have greatly helped in developing AI remastering technology." He emphasized that Korean content can be rediscovered through Viking Lab's technology.

This year, the company is participating in a research and development project under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The project involves building a cloud-based video editing platform capable of high-resolution remastering. Viking Lab also plans to develop software to commercialize and differentiate its AI production solutions in the global market. In addition, the company will remaster Life Pi (라이파이), the first science fiction (SF) comic book in Korea. The aim is to reinterpret the comic's setting in line with modern emotions and sensibilities so that it can be rediscovered by today's audience. Viking Lab has already reached a consensus on the remastering project with the original author, Kim San-ho.

Kim explained, "Because the government project focused on remastering, I had great interest in it, and that was the main reason for our participation. But more than just business potential, what drove us was affection for content itself and a sense of duty."

He concluded, "Through AI-based remastering, we aim to enhance efficiency in video editing and strengthen the uniqueness of K-content. There are many old, little-known works in Korea, and Viking Lab's technology will make it easier to recreate them."
